Bench Holdfast It seems to me that bench holdfasts are a lot less common these days than they used to be. That's too bad -- they're really a great way to secure boards to a workbench. If your bench has holes for bench dogs, you can build one for yourself. All you need is a common bar clamp, a scrap piece of bar stock, and a few minutes.

Clamp Blocks When edge gluing boards, I use scrap blocks to distribute the clamping pressure and avoid marring the edges. But sometimes the blocks shift out of position or fall to the floor before I get the clamps tightened. To solve this problem, I made a number of U-shaped clamp blocks that slip over the edge and stay right where I put them.

Clamp Holder, Overhead I found that I'd accumulated so many small clamps that storing them was becoming a problem. So I resolved to come up with a storage system that would keep my numerous bar clamps and spring clamps out of the way but still within easy reach. It turned out that the perfect spot was right over my head.

Clamp Holders, PVC Ceiling Mounted Like many woodworkers, I don't have a lot of room in my shop. So I try to make the most of the space that I have. Since most of my wall space is already taken up with cabinets and counters, I needed to find a place to store my long pipe clamps. So I turned to the ceiling, as you can see in the photo.

Clamp Pads Magnetic Whenever I use pipe clamps, I like to place a block of wood between the clamp and my workpiece. This clamping pad helps prevent damaging the surface of the wood. The problem is trying to hold the block in place as you tighten the clamp.
