Aquarium Plywood Glass zI had very little experience building anything prior to attempting this type of project. I researched as much as I could find on the internet and through discussion groups. Once I felt I had all I needed, I jumped right in and tried to make my tank as fast as possible. (Hint: taking your time is best) One smart thing I did, was planning on building a small version of my tank first. The theory being, if it leaks, I won't have a ton or more of water on the floor.

Aquarium Plywood Tank zWhen it comes to tank sizes, bigger is better! My fish were outgrowing my 33 gallon and I needed a bigger tank. The local fish stores wanted too much for their tanks. I had read about plywood tanks before and I do enjoy DIY projects. The solution was to build my own tank.

Aquarium Stand 55 Gallon w/Internal 10 Gallon zThis is the 55 gallon tank stand I designed. I personally did not want to spend the hundreds of dollars on a stand, and to have it not designed specifically for me. Instead, I spent roughly $130 on one that was designed specifically for me...and built by me.

Aquarium Stand for a large tank zHere you see a stand design that takes advantage of wood's best qualities while accommodating its faults. The five pairs of legs with their plywood inserts were assembled first. Note the routed groove for the plywood, the notches for the shelves, and in the background the half inch space under the plywood.

Aquarium Stand For Large Tanks - Fancy Style zThe stand frame can be built using either 3/4 inch Plywood or MDF. We will be making Lamination Beams by cutting the plywood or MDF to size and laminating them together to make beams that are 1-1/2 inches thick and 2-1/2 or 4 inches wide. This makes a very strong beam that will not warp. The floor, top and all six sides will be wrapped with 3/4 inch MDF. We recommend painting all surfaces, inside and out, with an epoxy paint. This will protect the stand for years.
Aquarium Stand For Tanks 10 to 125 Gallons Calculator zHere is a calculator that Zech Wendt and Scott Morell are developing to assist you in building your own aquarium stand for standard sized tanks 10 to 125 gallons. The construction of these stands is very similar to the stands you would purchase in a pet store. Just select the size of the tank. A materials list will be calculated and displayed on the following page along with assembly instructions.
