Egg, Turning a textured and colored solid
I always turned my eggs more pointed on one side than the other did. What I turn is my vision of how I think the egg should look. The eggs to the left are an ostrich egg and a hen egg. You can see that both ends of the eggs are about the same shape. Use a real egg to make a profile template for turning the shape if you want.

Finger top with chatter, Turning a
I have two commercially made chatter tools, a Sorby and a Stewart. They are both designed similar in that the cutter is a thin flat of cutting steel and it is held in a shaft so it can be adjusted to extend or retract the blade. Homemade versions made from a piece of flat spring steel or even a butter knife blade will work. Some turners produce their chatter by turning the stem thin first and them presenting a tool to the wood to produce the chatter patterns.

Finials
This is a link to a Google 3D SketchUp drawing of a finial to be used on a headboard or footboard. You will need the SketchUp software to download this drawing and its freely available online. We do not provide support for this software. Not all drawings have the measurements displayed but you can use the measurement tool in SketchUp to easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each lumber part. Most drawings do not have instructions, its assumed you can build it based on the completed drawing provided.

Flower Pot
Our house is like a cabin in the woods. We are in a commercial district on the edge of town and ten minutes from the malls, but the deer come through the back yard and there is a ruffed grouse who thinks he owns the place, especially a few female ruffed grouse. My wife decided, and rightly so, that plastic planters are out of place here so I decided to turn a couple.

Gavel, Turning a
Before you can start to turn a gavel the design, size, and wood need selected. The design I used here is a traditional one that looks good and works well as a functional or presentation gavel. When I was first asked to make gavel samples for the Oklahoma State House of Representatives I did not have any idea exactly what size to make or what would be a good design.

Goblet, Long Stem
I start turning the blank between centers. Even if the limb section were small, enough to fit in the chuck the bark would not make a good holding surface. You need a good solid grip on the blank to hollow the end grain.

Goblet, Turning A - revisited
In 1991 I wrote an article for Practical Woodworking about turning natural edge goblets. Since that time I have progressed and whereas I used to look for limbwood which was nearly circular I now look for material with a much more irregular natural edge.

Goblets with a Natural Edge, Turning
Goblets made with a natural edge forming the lip of the bowl present an interesting challenge to the turner and the opportunity to experiment. Because these goblets involve thin turning it may be thought that they are not for the inexperienced or the faint-hearted; but do not worry, experimentation costs nothing but time. The wood can be picked up, free, out of the hedgerow or somebodys firewood pile. Dry wood is not required; unseasoned wood is easier to turn and, sometimes, as it dries it distorts into interesting and attractive shapes.

Helix, Turning a
This project is in remembrance of Phil Wall who taught me how to do this project over the internet. I had hoped he would some day be putting this information on his own site but since that is no longer possible so I will provide the information here.
